GLAAD Media Awards Acknowledge Queer Films Galore, Give a Cold Shoulder to 'Emilia Pérez'

The nominees for the 36th edition of the GLAAD Media Awards have been announced, with movie and TV titles both well publicized ("Mean Girls," "Queer," "Wicked," "Agatha All Along," "Hacks") and perhaps less so ("Problemista," "Drive Away Dolls," "Sort Of," "Somebody Somewhere") making the list.
There was, however, a glaring omission. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given GLAAD's earlier comments on the film, the dramatic trans musical 'Emilia Pérez' was left in the cold, with no nominations.
"Back in November, GLAAD put out an article titled ' "Emilia Pérez' is Not Good Trans Representation,' labeling the film – among other things – a 'profoundly retrograde portrayal of a trans woman' and calling it 'a step backward,'" Deadline recalled.
The Jacques Audiard-directed Netflix release, which stars Zoe Saldaña and transgender actress Karla Sofía Gascón, has generated considerable Oscar buzz, with 13 nominations, and left its footprint at other awards lists, including Golden Globe triumphs for "Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy" and "Best Motion Picture - Non English Language," as well as a win for Saldaña (for "Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role"). More awards may be on the horizon, with Gascón "up for SAG and BAFTA awards in February," as Deadline reported.
The GLAAD Media Awards "honor fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community in film, TV, music, videogames, podcasts, journalism and more," text at the organization's site explains.
"Despite the snub for its 'Emilia Pérez,' Netflix still dominated the GLAAD noms," Deadline went on to note, "with 27 to lead all networks and platforms.
"ABC was the only other to muster double digits, with 10. Prime Video got nine, and Hulu and CBS took eight apiece."
Among the nominees in various categories were dramatic features "High Tide," "Good Grief," "Fancy Dance," "Big Boys," "Housekeeping for Beginners," and "Backspot," among other films.
Among TV series to be nominated were "Interview with the Vampire," "Abbott Elementary," "Star Trek: Discovery," "Kaos," "Palm Royale," "What We Do in the Shadows," and "Shrinking," among others.
"Will & Harper" was included in the documentary category, as were "Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero," "Chasing Chasing Amy," "Who I Am Not," and "Hidden Master: The Legacy of George Platt Lynes," among other titles.
The awards also recognized various reality shows, including "RuPaul's Drag Race," "Queer Eye," "The Boyfriend," "We're Here," "I Kissed A Boy," and "Selling Sunset," among other titles.
