Kirk Cameron Sweeps the 2015 Razzie Awards

EDGE READ TIME: 4 MIN.

While Hollywood is poised to give "Birdman" its official love at the Oscars, it was another actor with a popular 1980s persona that stole the Razzie Awards last night. Kirk Cameron, the Tiger Beat heartthrob from the popular Reagan-era series "Growing Pains," took home the Best Actor award with the Razzie Awards, given annually for the worst film work of the year.

He took the award for starring in and producing "Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas," his independently-made comic take on keeping Christ in Christmas, The film also won three other awards, giving the film a total of four awards in ten categories, including Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay and, in a coup for Cameron, the Worst Screen Combination, which he won with his ego for making the poorly received film.

"With a smile so wide and laughter that sounds so forced you half-expect the camera to pull back to reveal hostage takers, Mr. Cameron explains how several facets of the holiday -- the tree, Santa Claus, gifts -- have roots in religious tradition," wrote Ben Kenigsberg in reviewing the film in the New York Times.

"Saving Christmas" has a 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Upon its release, Cameron posted on his Facebook page: "Help me storm the gates of Rotten Tomatoes. All of you who love Saving Christmas -- go rate it at Rotten Tomatoes right now and send the message to all the critics that WE decide what movies we want our families see."

Cameron's "Oh, Come All You Faithful" plea was a bit like a that tree falling in the forest -- did anyone hear it? Only four people (as of today) bothered to comment, and they yielded largely negative commentary from those that bothered to reply to those comments. Our favorite (from Fromp Pig): "For what it's worth, I say to each his own. As long as Kirk is required to maintain at least 500 yds from any Boy Scout meeting, let him make his movies."

Nor did audiences turn out for the film: to date the movie has made $2,783,970 at the box office.

In other categories, Cameron Diaz took home the Worst Actress award for "The Other Woman" and "Sex Tape." Not that her performance in "Annie" wasn't also awful, but it was placed in the Supporting Actress category which she lost to Megan Fox for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles."

Kelsey Grammer won Worst Supporting Actor, but he had an advantage, being nominated for four films: "Expendables 3," "Legends of Oz," "Think Like a Man Too," "Transformers 4: Age of Extinction." And Michael Bay, the director of that latter film, took home Worst Director.

The Redeemer Award, given to a former Razzie winner that has turned their career around went to Ben Affleck: From Razzie "Winner" for "Gigli" to Oscar darling for "Argo" and "Gone Girl."
