A gay rights advocacy organization in Michigan has received a $3 million gift from the estate of the group's co-founder.

Equality Michigan announced the donation from Dr. Henry Messer on Tuesday. More than $1 million was given directly to the statewide anti-violence and political advocacy organization to support policy and victim services work. Another $2 million went to the organization's endowment.

Messer died in February at the age of 86. He confounded Triangle Foundation in 1991, which merged with Michigan Equality to form Equality Michigan in 2010. Messer was a neurosurgeon and gay rights activist who served in the military during World War II.
