A Chat with Belinda Carlisle
Kilian Melloy READ TIME: 2 MIN.
In my teen years one of the hottest songs on the radio was the Go-Go's "We Got The Beat." I can clearly remember my friends and I dancing to this song at many Sweet Sixteen parties. The Girl band that rocked the nation split up in the mid '80s and their lead singer, Belinda Carlisle, went on to a very successful solo career that has lasted throughout the years.
Before her appearance at Parliament House Resort during Gaydays weekend on Saturday, June 1, it was a pleasure to sit down and interview her.
When was the first time you realized you wanted to be a singer?
I knew from when I was a little girl.
Who was the first person in the biz to notice you and when was that?
We played around LA. Some record companies had interest in us, but no one would sign us. In those days there wasn't a track record of an all girl band that was successful. Miles Copeland from IRS records finally signed us.
How did it feel the first time you heard your song on the radio?
Amazing, and to this day it still is amazing.
Who were your inspirations in the music industry?
At that time I looked up to Debbie Harry.
How did the Go-Go's come together?
One night when I was sitting on a curb outside of a party.
Once the Go-Go's stopped recording was it a natural choice to record solo and how did it come about?
I just knew I had the opportunity to make an album, so I didn't waste any time and did it right away!
You have recorded so many songs, what are your favorite(s) and why?
Probably "Summer Rain," the arrangement is beautiful. I also love "Mad About You!"
You have travelled all over the world. What is your favorite city and what is your favorite concert venue and why?
I love anywhere in India. It's my favorite place on the planet. And probably the Greek theatre in L.A. is my favorite venue.
Your talent and brand has sustained over 20 years. How do you continue to entertain your fan base and how do you engage new fans?
I think it is pure luck!
What do you do for fun?
I travel quite a bit, that's my big passion in life.
What would people be shocked to know about you?
That I'm a complete yoga head.
When did you realize you had a gay following and what are your feelings towards, and for, the gay community?
We've (the GoGo's) pretty much have always had a gay following, and of course, I'm pleased!
Catch Belinda Carlisle performing her hits "Heaven is a Place on Earth," "Circle in the Sand," "Mad About You," and many more at the Parliament House Resort on Saturday, June 1.
