Gay DJ Peter Elie, a regular on Toronto's gay club scene, was found dead in the early hours of May 14 in the laundry room of his apartment building. He was 52. A murder suspect is now in custody.

Elie's body was found at about 2:00 a.m. by authorities who were responding to what local news source CP24 described as a "small fire" in the laundry area.

Canadian news service|https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/toronto-man-arrested-dj-peter-elie-1.5573167|CBC reported> that Elie's body showed "visible signs of trauma."

Building residents said that the had heard a commotion just before they noticed a "smell of smoke" from the laundry room. They said that the "screaming and yelling" they heard was replaced with "silence."

Police released security camera footage to the public and later identified a suspect. 27-year-old Rico Harvey - who news reports said had has "no fixed address, according to police reports - was taken into custody on May 15 and faces second-degree murder charges. No motive was disclosed, and reports said it is thought Elie and Harvey had not encountered one another previously.

CP 24 quoted a friend of Elie's, Jason Pelletier, as saying, "He was definitely part of the makeup of our community.

"Something that brings us together, especially in this community, was our music and he was the guy who pressed play for the party to start," Pelletier continued.
