Variety is reporting that Disney will make a sequel to its live-action remake of "Aladdin."

Writers John Gatins and Andrew Berloff will pen the new film and sources told the publication that the movie is in early development and that it took about six months for producers to figure out the direction of the sequel. It's unclear if Guy Ritchie, who directed the 2019 remake, will return. Producers are hopeful in bringing back its stars Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, and Will Smith, who played Aladdin, Princess Jasmine and the blue Genie respectively.

Variety also reports that the sequel will be released in theaters and not on Disney+, the company's streaming service.

The 2019 version of "Aladdin" was based on the 1992 classic animated film and is in line with Disney's task of turning its animated movies into live-action remakes. The new movie went on to earn $1.051 billion worldwide on a $183 million budget. Nevertheless, Massoud has been vocal about his career since starring in the box office smash, saying in December that he has not gotten a single audition since starring in the film.
